The Group Coaching and Mentoring Framework

The Group Coaching and Mentoring framework is a professional development design based on the fundamentals of group coaching, metacognition, self regulated learning implemented using the community of practice approach.  The design was created by one manager's need to successfully supervise 40  instructors teaching at a fully online, four year academic institution transitioning to a new mission and expectations for its educators.  Working in a exclusive virtual learning environment requires a sound platform for collaboration and innovation. Without it, the work culture suffers and alignment with the organization's mission is skewed. The manager realized that developing communities of practice within the faculty cohort would be a structured way in which the core competencies of group coaching could be administered. Employees in a virtual work space could also foster critical thinking and self regulation in order to grow their instructional practice and uphold the organizations new policies on teaching excellence. While the framework was developed under the confines of an educational institution, the design is applicable to all organizations wishing to foster a culture of change.

Why Is Our Research Important?

As a team of researchers and educators working in different parts of the country,  we know first-hand about the challenges of collaborating in virtual work environments. Creativity and knowledge management suffer under the flexibility of being geographically dislocated.  Our research focuses on ways to foster organizational change in a group or organization that needs to thrive in a global economy. Through our own challenges, we discovered that the application of the Group Coaching and Mentoring framework can successfully promote organizational influence, break barriers to inclusion, and increase job satisfaction in the 21st Century (Algozzini, Gabay, Voyles, Bessolo & Batchelor, 2017).
